The teams had met twice before in the league with the opposition coming out on top on both occasions.
On a hot and sunny day, the game started at an intense speed, Pont pushing the pace hoping to break Caephilly’s defence and spirits early, pressing high up the pitch. Caerphilly reacted with a firm defensive line and breaking Pont’s own defence with some wide and attacking play. First half ended 0-0 with Caerphilly the more superior team.
As both teams put 100% into the game Caerphilly absorbed the pressure and getting rewarded in the 50th minute when Caerphilly’s striker Bethan Williams broke through Pont’s defence, passing to Chloe Dobson to score our 1st goal. A great save by goalie Nia Rich looked to have put the game out of the Pont’s reach but a late equaliser pushed the game into extra time. Score 1-1.
Within minutes of extra time, Bethan breaks the weakening defence to score herself and Caerphilly go in front for the second time in the game. A few minutes later, captain Claire Bartlett makes it 3-1 bending the ball in from a corner kick - Amazing! The game goes into the 2nd half of extra time, confidence is high!
With the heat and clock taking its toll on both sides, Pont score 2 goals in 2 minutes to equalise once more. Score 3-3. A list of penalty takers is quickly scribbled down but not needed! In the 115th minute, the pressure of 3 corners in succession leads to Lauren Anderson putting the ball into the back of the net with a goal line scramble to put the game out of Pont’s reach once and for all. A great result for the team, club and women’s football.
Caerphilly Ladies will now play Cwmbran Ladies in the cup final at 4pm on 8th May at Ocean Park Arena, Cardiff.
