Caerphilly Castle Walking Football Team Shines in Their First League Matches of the Season

September 24, 2024

Our Walking Football team kicked off their league campaign in style earlier this month with a fantastic showing at the Thames Valley League.

Despite facing scorching heat, the team rose to the challenge and delivered some thrilling performances across five games. Now, as the ladies gear up for their next match a week from Sunday, let’s take a look back at how things unfolded during the opening fixtures.

The Goal: 9 Points from 5 Games—Mission Accomplished!

Heading into the tournament, we set ourselves an ambitious target of securing 9 points from 5 games, and we’re proud to say we hit the mark! The team scored a total of five impressive goals, with Kate Lloyd proving to be the star of the day by netting four of them. Anna Matheson also added her name to the scoresheet with a crucial goal, helping push us towards victory.

While we celebrated those five goals, there were plenty of near-misses and close calls, showing just how competitive and determined our players were throughout the matches. Every game was a showcase of skill, passion, and teamwork—a true reflection of the hard work and commitment the squad has put in.

Player of the Day: Kate Lloyd

There was no doubt about it—Kate Lloyd was the standout performer of the day, with her four goals securing critical victories for the team. Her relentless energy and sharp finishing in front of goal earned her the well-deserved Player of the Day award, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Special Shout-Outs to Our Star Performers:

  • Rachel Roberts for her fantastic contributions that made Amy’s life easier on the pitch. Her efforts in both attack and defence were vital to the team’s success.
  • Mandy Beach for stepping up to play in a new position and taking extra care to protect those hamstrings! Her adaptability and commitment to the team didn’t go unnoticed.
  • Anna Matheson, our captain of the day, led by example throughout the tournament. Not only did she inspire the team with her leadership, but she also got on the scoresheet when it mattered most. A true captain’s performance!
  • Jo Caddy for being a rock at the back. Her solid defending and smart decision-making provided the foundation for our success in each game.
  • Amy Ryan, our Vice Captain, showed her leadership from the back and mastered the smaller ball with ease, commanding the defence like a pro. Her calm and composed play was crucial in keeping us organised.

Looking Ahead: Onwards and Upwards!

We are incredibly proud of the entire squad for their efforts in the opening matches. It’s always tough playing under difficult conditions, but the ladies showed resilience, teamwork, and a real passion for the game. As we move forward, we’re excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us.

Next up: the ladies are back in action a week from Sunday, and we can’t wait to see them build on their fantastic start. Onwards and upwards!
